Producing Meaningful Long Descriptions For Visitors With Disabilities: Can Artificial Intelligence Live Up To The Task?

Earlier this year I had the incredible opportunity to work on a research project with the National Gallery of Art. Together we dove in and explored the world of AI and how it might be used to help create and maintain accessible experiences for users with disabilities by creating meaningful and effective long descriptions of artwork. We interviewed 16 individuals with various disabilities, mostly blind or low vision, to understand the true user preference and experience. The results of the research and the final recommendations are outlined in the final report. Audio and video clips are included throughout the report that come directly from the interviews to help demonstrate and illustrate that same true user preference and perspective.

The report is provided in both a PDF and Word format using the links below. Please note that the table of contents may be a bit quirky depending on the viewer and assistive technology.
